Sports (Deep Tissue) Massage

This type of massage is focussed on the preparation, repair and recovery process for sportsmen and women, but can reap great benefits for anyone that requires a deep tissue massage.

This can be adapted so that the massage techniques are applied in a way that is gentler for clients that do not like a deep tissue massage. It is also possible to provide a very effective back and neck massage to clients who are still wearing loose clothing.

My Approach to Sports Massage

I qualified at St Marys University, Twickenham, London where I learnt the techniques to apply a deep tissue massage alongside the study of Anatomy and Physiology.

This type of massage is focussed on the preparation, repair and recovery process for sportsmen and women, but can reap great benefits for anyone that requires a deep tissue massage. It is worth emphasising that I apply the appropriate level of pressure on a case by case basis, which following a one-to-one consultation will be agreed by the client, and so it is perfectly achievable to offer anyone a gentle massage.

In addition, I can adapt massage techniques so that a client can benefit from a brilliant back and neck massage whilst still wearing loose clothing.

I can also bring my knowledge of Tai Chi and Tui Na (Chinese Massage) to combine improved Chi flow if the client would like this additional approach, combining the best of West and East. The Tai Chi and Chinese Yoga experience along with my PT skills allows me to recommend many effective stretch techniques for a client to work on at home.

In my opinion everyone should have a regular massage.

Effleurage – “to touch lightly”

• Applies medium pressure to the body

• Warms the skin, opening the pores of the skin

• Stimulates nerve endings, increases blood and lymphatic circulation, taking oxygen and nutrients to the muscle which can help the repair process and rate of recovery

Petrissage – “to knead”, - you really get to work the muscles and other soft tissue

• Manipulate the tissue and muscle

• Breaks down tension and tightness at a deep level

• Stretches the muscle tissue, and improves suppleness and elasticity of the muscles

• Aids in removing waste products

Frictions – “to rub”

• Releases tension, scar tissue and adhesions

• Improves local circulation

Percussion/Tapotement – often used before a sporting event to help warm up

• Brisk, invigorating and stimulating

• Stimulates both soft tissue and nerve endings

• Leads to improved circulation

General Benefits of Massage

• Promotes a sense of relaxation and well-being

• Eases muscular pain and improves the range of movement by exercising weak, tired or atrophied muscles.

• It can help trigger the release of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers

• Helps to correct poor posture often resulting from sitting for long periods

• Can help reduce the number and severity of headaches

• Helps to clear the mind due to improved blood flow and reduced tension

• Soothes anxiety and depression

• Aids in achieving a good night’s sleep

• Boosts your immune system by promoting improved lymphatic flow and speeds up the body’s natural inflammation process around a muscle strain

• Can be used by athletes at any level to prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts which in turn leads to improved performance and quicker recovery times
